SCHOLASTIC
TRAP
Trapshooting in America was once as common
among high school sports as football or basketball. It is only in the past two decades that
participation has significantly declined among high school athletic programs. The Board of Directors
of the National Shooting Sports Foundation established the Scholastic Trapshooting Program (SCTP)
to return youth trapshooting programs to a place of national prominence.
The purpose of the SCTP is to offer scholastic
age boys and girls an opportunity to enjoy the thrill and excitement of breaking clay targets
with a shotgun in a safe and positive environment. This purpose is supported by three goals:
- Character Development: The importance
of commitment, responsibility, leadership, teamwork, self-confidence, and self-discipline
to individual and team success is stressed. All SCTP participants are members of a team, as
it is well known that team sports have an inherent value for enhancing character development.
- Firearms Safety: The safe handling and
use of firearms is a major program focus. Safety is continually addressed and stressed in
every facet of the SCTP.
- Lifetime Sport: The third goal is to
introduce young people to a sport that can be enjoyed throughout their lifetime, a sport that
offers a level playing field for both genders, one that rewards concentration, composure,
discipline, and finesse rather than size, speed, and strength. Trapshooting is a family sport
providing opportunities for people of all ages to participate and compete at all levels from
local events to the Olympics.
The Mt. Airy Chapter of the IWLA sponsors
a Scholastic Trapshooting Program (SCTP) team. It is comprised of both members' non-members'
children and practices on Wednesday nights at the club. All participants provide their own shotguns
and the club provides the ammunition and clay targets. The team competes in local, state, and
national events and recently placed 22nd at the Grand American World Trapshooting Championship.
